By John Aubin This is our weekly column on players that have weekly favorable matchups and number of games. These are also players who are under 50% ownership in standard fantasy leagues. We base these pickups on a nine-category league with the following categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, three-pointers made, turnovers, free-throw percentage and field-goal percentage.
In Week 9 we have 13 teams with four games each, 14 teams with three games and three teams with only two games for the week.
Four Games: BOS, BKN, CHA, CLE, DET, HOU, LAC, MEM, MIA, OKC, POR, TOR, WAS
Three Games: ATL, CHI, DAL, DEN, IND, MIL, MIN, NOP, NYK, ORL, PHX, SAC, SAS, UTA
Two Games: GSW, LAL, PHI
Tyler Johnson G Miami Heat: Johnson had been inconsistent to start the year with some mediocre performances. But the 25-year-old guard has been on fire in his last five games with averages of 16.6 points, 2.6 three-pointers, and 2.4 rebounds. He is also shooting 60% from the field over that time frame which will surely regress but for now, fantasy owners should be picking up Johnson for this week with the Heat playing four games.
Fred VanVleet G Toronto Raptors: VanVleet is not worth adding in standard leagues but is a good pickup in deeper leagues. The 23-year-old guard has earned a spot in the Raptors rotation but is backing up Kyle Lowry. Being Lowry’s backup means VanVleet’s minutes will be capped. He is averaging 21 minutes over his last ten games which should be about where he lands for now on a nightly basis. VanVleet is productive in his time on the court and over his last four games is averaging 11.0 points, 6.0 assists, and 1.8 three-pointers.
Milos Teodosic G Los Angles Clippers: Teodosic was dropped in many fantasy leagues when he hurt his foot in November. Now he should be back this week and his current return date is on Monday. With the Clippers playing four games now is the time to add the 30-year-old guard. With the Clippers struggling with injuries in their backcourt, Teodosic has a chance to see big minutes. Fantasy owners needing a point guard and assists should be picking him up now before someone else in your league grabs him.
Caris LeVert G-F Brooklyn Nets: LeVert has been starting for the Nets and has earned a major role in the rotation. And he is producing some good numbers. Over his last three games, LeVert is averaging 16.7 points, 7.0 assists. 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals. Those are numbers that make LeVert worth owning in all fantasy leagues. With the Nets playing four games this week, owners should be grabbing the 23-year-old. And amazingly he is only owned in 35% of leagues.
Al-Farouq Aminu F Portland Trailblazers: Aminu looks to be fully recovered from an ankle injury that caused him to miss 13 games. Over his last two contests, Aminu averaged 16.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 three-pointers over 34 minutes. The 27-year-old forward was dropped in many fantasy leagues when he got hurt so he should be on many waiver wires. With Aminu heating up and Portland playing four games this week it is a good time to pick him up if owners need rebounds and threes.
